Peer Advisors and DUG Leaders

Peer advisors and DUG leaders provide undergraduate students in Biology with informal advice on concentrations, academics, and more. DUGs are a great resource for meeting and interacting with peers in a collaborative and advising capacity.

If you are interested in one of the Biology concentrations or have questions about the concentration that you are in, Biology Peer Advisors are available to help! Simply email the person you are hoping to meet to set up the time and place. Peer advising meetings will be very informal, taking place anywhere on campus or online, at any time that fits your schedule.

  • Nimrit

    Nimrit Ahuja

Peer Advisor, Concentration - Biology A.B.

I'm a varsity athlete on the cross country and track & field team, Outreach Director for the Diabetes Link, and a volunteer with Brown Market Shares! I've received both the UTRA and SPRINT awards, and I currently do research in the Global Emergency Medicine Department on miRNAs in breastmilk, and specifically how they differ in underweight women. Outside of school-related activities, I’m enjoy spikeball, pickleball, karaoke, R&B music, and cooking. I've been through the chaos of picking (and frequently switching) my major, figuring out how to reach out and join a lab, and learning how to balance life as both an athlete and a premed. So if you have questions about any of the above or anything else, feel free to reach out!

  • Jolie Barnard

    Jolie Barnard

Peer Advisor, Concentration - Biology Sc.B. (Neurobiology)

Hi, I’m Jolie! I’m a senior from Sacramento, California, double concentrating in Biology and IAPA. I've been involved in wet lab research since my sophomore year, and currently work in a spine tumor lab on campus. Outside of school, I'm involved in student journalism (the Indy), HOPE, and WiSE. Feel free to reach out with any questions!

Hi! My name is Sumner Chmielewski. I am studying Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I am on the swim and dive team at Brown and have been a part of clubs relating to athlete mental health. I have switched concentration interests on my way to biochemistry, so I have various experiences! These include a public health research opportunity, as well as a chemistry and materials science lab, which I am currently in. I gained these opportunities through Brown’s UTRA grant. I also have reached outside of my concentration, having taken classes in environmental science and international affairs. Please reach out with any questions, I am happy to talk through course selection, especially balancing academics and outside interests/ athletics!!

  • Naomi Do

    Naomi Do

Peer Advisor, Concentration - Health and Human Biology A.B.

Hey y’all! My name is Naomi, and I’m currently a pre-health senior (c/o ‘26) studying Health and Human Biology on the Social Determinants of Health track; I’m into exploring how different communities are impacted by health disparities and resource allocation, so a lot of my work on campus is centered around that. Currently, I’m a Bonner Community Fellow, a Team Coordinator at Connect for Health, a Crisis Counselor at Crisis Text Line, and a research volunteer at the Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center. I've dabbled in different research labs, too– ranging from clinical psychology, oncology, and community health– here at Brown and through various programs/internships. With that said, if you’re looking for someone to chat about getting involved in community-based research, public health initiatives, or service opportunities both on and off campus, I’m always happy to share what I’ve learned (and what I wish I’d known sooner!).

  • Rishika Kartik

    Rishika Kartik

Peer Advisor, Concentration - Biology A.B.
Hi! I’m Rishika, a rising senior at Brown from Colorado, pursuing an AB in Biology and an independent concentration in “Accessible Design.” My academic interests blend science and creativity—designing inclusive medical devices, digital tools, and artwork to improve quality of life for those with chronic illnesses or disabilities.
I grew up around fresh coffee, warm bagels, and calculus. My mom, a math teacher, turned our dining room into a tutoring hub. Students would arrive, groggy and reticent, and leave caffeinated, curious, and joyful. Watching her build meaningful relationships, especially with those underrepresented in STEM, inspired my own passion for mentorship and teaching.
That passion has brought me to the National Federation of the Blind, where I’ve volunteered and mentored students for over seven years. At Brown, I carry that same spirit as a peer advisor, helping students from all walks of life build confidence and pursue what they love.
As a pre-med and artist, I’m eager to advise students on navigating pre-med at Brown, choosing classes, finding research opportunities, and connecting biology with the arts or social impact. I’ve conducted research on art and vision loss as a Royce Fellow, and on diabetes tech accessibility at the Barbara Davis Center. I’ve published in Rehabilitation Psychology, Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics, and The Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, and presented at Johns Hopkins, Johnson & Johnson, and more. In my free time, I love hopping between Providence coffee shops and overusing the semicolon. I’m excited to help you navigate both the academic and personal sides of being a biology concentrator!
  • Ishan Khurana

I'm also pre-med, and am a part of Brown's chapter of Doctors and Engineers Without Borders (DEWB), Brown Miriam Volunteer Project (BMVP), and will be starting work with Brown EMS (BEMS) this Fall. I participate in research in the Molecular Biology and Nanomedicine Lab at Warren Alpert, focusing on developing tools to deliver treatment for neurodegenerative diseases across the blood-brain barrier. I'm also passionate about education; I work as a TA for CHEM 0330 (Gen Chem I) and BIOL 0280 (Biochemistry), and am conducting some educational research with Professor Wang for CHEM 0330L. Outside of that, I play ultimate frisbee, write and make crosswords for post- magazine, and enjoy printmaking.
Because of my nontraditional educational pathway, I've come to learn a lot about Brown's curriculum and getting involved with opportunities you're passionate about here. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions about Biology at Brown or anything I mentioned above! I'm always happy to chat!
